Meet Maria “Maca” Guzman

maria-camila-artisanWelcome to our first Artisan Tropic staff Q&A, where you can learn a little more about the people behind our company and its products. First up, Maca, as she’s known among family and friends. She’s the inspiration behind Artisan Tropic.

Name: Maria Camila Guzman

Nickname: Maca

Hometown: Charlotte, NC

Position at Artisan Tropic: Product Development & Design and random things that need to get done! There really is no job title for what I do.

Childhood ambition: I wanted to be a fashion designer.

Walk me through a typical day at Artisan Tropic … A typical day would be responding e-mails in the morning, going to the warehouse and offices. I send out samples and online orders there with the warehouse manager. Right now I’m designing the new chili pepper flavor we are coming out with, so I’m coordinating that with our graphic designer, making the nutrition tables, UPC codes, etc. I do so many different things in one day that there is no typical day.

What is it like working with your family? It’s awesome. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. Literally the best feeling, especially when your family is more than just family; they’re also my best friends in life.

Are there any new or exciting things you’re currently working on? The Chili Pepper plantain strips coming out 2016.

What inspires you? I get inspired by health and wellness. I love that this lifestyle has brought us to creating a brand, and I think it’s really inspiring to see how this lifestyle can affect your life. I also get really inspired by entrepreneurs and other people who have made it big and started small like us.

What do you do for fun? I love to paint. Love, love it.

If you weren’t at your current job, what do you think you’d be doing? I would probably be doing something with nutrition, or working with a non-profit. I love micro-financing and that sort of stuff.

If you could have any food appear in front of you right this minute, what would it be? Avocado.

You were born in Colombia. What advice would you give to someone visiting for the first time? I would tell them to eat arepas every single day, all day, because they are so good and I’m obsessed. With chicken and guac on top. Nothing beats that. And try all the amazing fruit. Oh my goodness!

What’s your favorite Artisan Tropic snack? I love the Naturally Sweet [plantain strips]. I can’t think of a better snack to have mid-afternoon.
