With Mother’s Day right around the corner we wanted to thank the women who work at the plant where our snacks are made. They employ mostly women, many of them mothers. It’s thanks to these women, who carefully hand peel and package our snacks that you’re able to enjoy them here. We would love for you to meet all of them but for this occasion we spoke to Marta Lucia Montoya Perez, a 49-year-old mom of five. Her eldest passed away; the other four range in age from 17 to 32.
Plantain chips are wonderful right out of the bag, but there are so many other ways to enjoy them beyond dipping them in mayo or guac. Here are four unique ways to enjoy your chips. Give them a try!
1. Sprinkle Them On Salads
We love this idea by our friends at Barefoot Provisions, an online market of primal and paleo foods. Crush plantain chips, sprinkle on your favorite salad. Voila!
Reading labels these days can be a little bit confusing. What do all those claims mean? Which are governed by a third party and which aren’t? Sometimes it’s hard to decipher it all. If you’ve ever wondered what the little icons and seals on our packages mean, we’ve broken it down for you.
If you’re familiar with Artisan Tropic snacks, you know that we use sustainable palm oil to crisp our plantain and yucca strips. It’s one of three ingredients or less that we use in our snacks and one that we take great care to source.
Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil extracted from the fruit of the oil palms. According to the International Institute of Sustainable Development, palm oil is the most widely used vegetable oil in the world today. What makes it so attractive? Palm oil has many benefits. It has the perfect balance of fatty acids, which makes it stable for cooking at high temperatures unlike some other vegetable oils, which can become unstable when heated. Palm oil is also cholesterol free and since it doesn’t require hydrogenation, it’s also trans-fat free.

A little about us
You may be wondering who we are. We are the Guzmans. Our family of four moved from Bogotá, Colombia to Charlotte, North Carolina in 1994. In 2011, our daughter fell very ill. Many opinions and treatments later, we still didn’t know what was wrong so we took her to a holistic nutritionist who recommended some drastic dietary changes. Her body began to heal. From this experience, we learned the importance of whole food nutrition and became passionate about eating healthy. So passionate, that we launched our own line of healthy snacks.
